The
State
Treasurer’s
Office
is
responsible
for the
Gov.
Guinn
Millennium
Scholarship,
Nevada
Prepaid
Tuition
Program,
and the
state’s
529
College
Savings
Plans
programs;
Unclaimed
Property;
and for
ensuring
the
state’s
investments
and debt
obligations
are
managed
prudently
and in
the best
interest
of the
people
of
Nevada.
The Gov.
Guinn
Millennium
Scholarship
program
has
received
sufficient
funding
through
Fiscal
Year
2011
(July 1,
2010
through
June 30,
2011).
Action
by the
Legislature’s
Interim
Finance
Committee
on July
21
transferred
enough
money
into the
account.
In a
June 21
news
release
about
the
decision,
Treasurer
Kate
Marshall
said,
“The
goal of
Legislative
leadership,
the
Board of
Regents,
and my
office
has been
to find
a
temporary
funding
solution
to get
the
Millennium
Scholarship
program
financially
solvent
through
Fiscal
Year
2011,
which
would
then
provide
the full
Legislature
with the
ability
to
thoughtfully
review
the
long-term
merits
of
continuing
the
program
past
this
coming
school
year.
Today’s
action
is a
direct
result
of
people
coming
together
to find
a common
solution
that
directly
benefits
students
and our
higher
education
system.”
Tragically,
Kenny
Guinn,
the
former
Governor
who
created
the
program
that was
later
named in
his
honor,
died the
next
day. His
wife of
54
years,
Dema,
and
their
family
asked
that
those
who wish
to honor
the
memory
of Gov.
Guinn to
send a
donation
to the
Kenny C.
Guinn
Memorial
Millennium
Scholarship
Fund in
lieu of
flowers
or other
gifts.
The
Nevada
College
Savings
Plans
Program,
including
Nevada
Prepaid
Tuition,
continues
to be a
great
investment
in a
child’s
future
education
needs.
Several
popular
programs
provide
opportunities
for
family
members
and
friends
to give
a gift
that
will
last a
lifetime:
a
college
education.
The
State
Treasurer’s
Office
Unclaimed
Property
Division
has
experienced
significant
growth
in terms
of
collections
and
claims
paid to
rightful
owners
over the
past few
years.
Collections
in FY
2009
($77.2
million)
were
more
than
160%
above
collections
in 2005
($29.6
million),
while
claims
paid
increased
by 218%,
from
$7.9
million
in FY
2005 to
$25.3
million
in FY
2009. In
addition,
the
State
Treasurer’s
Office
has
implemented
a Fast
Track
program
which
significantly
reduces
the
amount
of time
it takes
to
process
a claim.
A new
Voluntary
Disclosure
Agreement
program
designed
to
encourage
non-compliant
businesses
to
conform
to
Nevada’s
unclaimed
property
laws
without
penalties
and
interest
being
added is
also
available.
The
State
Treasurer’s
Office
has
launched
two new
web
pages:
The
Student
Page was
developed
to
assist
students,
parents,
and
teachers;
the
America’s
Military
Heroes
page
provides
quick
links to
financial
information
designed
to
assist
members
of the
military.

two
